CIS Negative

The usual method of roll scanning with a backlit image (transmissive scanning) can run into trouble if the roll is particularly translucent. In such cases front lighting (reflective scanning) may prove more effective. The resulting image is, however, a negative of the backlit image, so CISNEGATIVE performs the appropriate reversal.

In principle, either the NOTES or the WORDS channel could be used, but the WORDS channel lends itself better to the purpose, particularly as the real-time scan image display already displays the words in negative.

• Turn the NOTES lamp OFF and the WORDS lamp ON. Set the WORDS clip level so the scanner displays RED holes on a BLACK background (the NOTES clip level shouldn't need adjusting).
• Scan the roll. If the end of roll alarm sounds, mute it by pressing "Q".
• Pass the CIS file through the CISSPLIT utility to produce two CIS files: a Notes file and a Lyrics file. Discard the Notes file, which should be blank.
• Pass the Lyrics CIS file through CISNEGATIVE.
• The resulting filename will be along the lines of Filename (lyrics) (negative).cis which can be renamed to something more appropriate.

The contrast can be improved still further by rotating the backlight slightly to prevent light reflecting off the white fluorescent tube.

To restore the backlight alignment, turn the NOTES lamp back on and run the scanner with the stepper motor turned off, so that the roll is stationary.
Rotate the backlight for maximum overall illumination of the NOTES channel displayed in GREEN.
