If that means hiring at least one full-time lawyer, perhaps so. But I offer a more economical solution.
I can be your in-house lawyer, part-time and as required. We agree a certain number of days or half-days a month, and I become your legal department. Better still, if there's no work to be done, you can stand me down at any time, so you pay only when there is a real need. If you have a larger project, we can add some more time. It's a totally flexible arrangement.
As general counsel, I look at the legal needs of the business from the inside - integrating with other business functions and concentrating on business priorities. The trusted adviser to the directors.
The breadth of my legal and commercial experience is a real asset. I can handle most commercial and compliance issues. For things outside my field, like employment or property, I co-ordinate external advisers to provide best value.
Two important points:
- when working in-house I'm bound by professional rules that restrict what i can do - for instance, I can't provide legal services to the public.
- if you contract with me direct, my work for you will not be covered by professional indemnity insurance, and there will be no comeback in the unlikely event that I mess up. If that's a problem, I can provide a similar service through a law firm with the benefit of its insurance - but the cost will be higher.
As in-house counsel I am still an independent contractor, engaged through my company, so I am not an employee for PAYE purposes and I do not gain employment protection rights.
See the pages on acting for your business and what I do for more detail of how I can support your business.Beyond the legal field, I can help with strategy, marketing and succession issues, or even act as non-exec director or company secretary.
